Chinese Mandarin for Kids – General information

Chinese mandarin language Class

Textbooks: We use the current textbooks that are used in primary schools in China for Years 1-6. We are careful to ensure that our students study at the most appropriate level for their individual needs. Hence all children, except Beginners, will have a short language test on enrolment so that we can match their skill level to the best class. If children can already speak some Mandarin but are unable to write, they will need to start at our Beginners level.

教材:目前中国小学使用的教材,1- 6年级。学生入学时将会有入学考试。根据他们的汉语水平,我们将把他们放在他们合适的水平。如果他们只会说话,不会写,需要从头做起。

What will be covered in these classes?

The syllabus is comprehensive but different at each level. Both spoken and written Mandarin will be covered. Here are some examples from our beginner’s level:

Level 1-1: You will use the Year (1) Chinese primary school textbook (Volume 1). You will learn to recognize and pronounce the 26 Chinese pinyin letters. This will let you correctly read aloud pinyin words that you see. Students who already speak some Mandarin will be able to use pinyin to write simple notes to their family and friends.

Level 1-2: When you move on to the Year (1) Chinese primary school textbook (Volume 2) you will consolidate your pinyin knowledge. You will learn initials, finals, and simple writing of words such as gold, wood, water, fire, sun, and stars. You will learn a simple poem, some children’s songs and nursery rhymes. Also some basic greetings, how to introduce oneself, numbers, colours.

Level 1-1 :小学语文一年级上册:汉语拼音26个字母。 自然拼读。看到拼音可以自己念出来,对于已经会说话的孩子,可以用拼音给父母留便条。

Level 1-2 :小学语文一年级下册: 巩固拼音,声母韵母,简单的汉子书写,比如,金木水火,天,太阳,星星,简单的课文,儿歌, 歌谣。如何打招呼,自我介绍,颜色,星期数字等。

Assessment of Progress:

As your child learns it is important to track their progress so that they continue to enjoy learning with material that is pitched at the right level for their ability.

Twice a year we will formally assess your child’s progress with tests of speaking and writing skills. Those who pass the test will move on to the next level, otherwise they will stay in the same class to continue building their skills.

为了及时根据您孩子的水平调整他们适合的水平课程。每年我们会有两次考试来测试学习他们的语言学习成果,如果他们能通过,将把他们挪入下一个阶段的学习,(升班)。 如果他们不能通过,他们将留在同一个班。

Chinese “learn and play” workshop

We understand that children also learn while they play. This workshop is designed to develop your child’s language skills in a fun and relaxing way. We take the skills that have been taught in the regular classroom and turn them into games and activities. For example we will take the key words learnt that week and play games with them, both individually and as a group. We will also use different ways to express our learning, for example by painting, drawing or with simple conversations. After the games there will be the chance to practice reading and writing using the words from the games. The emphasis will be on having fun and enjoying practicing language skills in a way that is natural for children.

Q: If my kids didn’t go to the regular Chinese Mandarin language class, can they still join the “Learn and Play” Workshop?

A: Yes, they can still join the workshop. They will find the games will strengthen their skills and they will meet the other children, make friends and enjoy playing together. While it is ideal to pair the workshop with regular lessons it is still useful to experience using Mandarin in a play-oriented setting.

Q: Will my child learn Mandarin as quickly as children who are studying in China?

A: Your child is able to learn good Mandarin skills from these courses, but it will be at a slower rate than if they were living and studying in China. Although we use the same textbooks your child will be attending one class per week which is very different to students in China having daily lessons and full immersion in Mandarin in their everyday life. Of course, our New Zealand students who are able to hear and speak Mandarin at home will find this greatly benefits their learning progress!

Q: How seriously will my child be expected to study? I’ve heard that teachers in China push their students to study very seriously – will these classes be like that?

A: No, these classes are an extra-curricular activity and are paced accordingly. We like to motivate our students and will encourage them to develop their skills –but we try to provide a friendly learning environment and we do not pressure our students. Our emphasis is on enjoying learning Mandarin. Even students who might find learning a new language a little challenging will benefit as they will get to understand another culture, and will make new friends.

Q: Is there a lot of homework? Is it important to do the homework?

A: We do set homework tasks, but not large amounts. Especially for children, practicing their new language skills for short periods of time (e.g. 5-10 minutes daily) on a regular basis is of more benefit than occasionally practicing for a long period (e.g. 1 hour a week). So homework completion is a good idea and will support your child’s classroom learning. However we understand that families often have busy lives so we also provide the opportunity to catch up on these tasks within the classroom.
